Smiles Change Lives program provides access to orthodontic care for needy youth
Smiles Change Lives (SCL), a national nonprofit organization that helps low-income children obtain orthodontic treatment and Dr. Scanlan, are now serving the Asheville area. Since 1997, this organization has changed the lives and smiles of more than 1,200 children due to the dedication of hundreds of orthodontists nationwide.
Locally, Dr Scanlan has teamed up with Smiles Change Lives to provide pro bono, comprehensive treatment for approved SCL patients. Each partner orthodontist relies on SCL for its thorough application and screening process which delivers the most qualified, motivated children in their community.
“Because our program is new to the area, our greatest need at the moment is referrals from oral health professionals and clinics that serve low-income families,” shares Andrea Umbreit, SCL Director of Marketing and Communications. With the current economic downturn, the agency is prepared to serve more low-income families whose children would benefit greatly from treatment.
Please refer any children who meet the following guidelines:
Youth ages 11-18, not already wearing braces
Only children with a moderate to severe malocclusion are accepted
Documented family income at or below 200% of Federal Poverty Level
Good oral hygiene as indicated on dental referral form from general dentist
Motivated to comply with program guidelines and treatment plan
Approved patients pay either $250 or $500 toward the cost of treatment, based on their income and available program funding.
“We know it is often difficult to disuss orthodontic care with respect to a family’s financial situation,” asserts Ms. Umbreit. “However, we hope that you will recommend SCL to any family who has concerns about being able to provide braces for their child. It’s our job to try to help as many kids as we can.”
Interested candidates are encouraged to visit www.smileschangelives.org/qualify to determine if their family meets the financial guidelines. Families interested in applying can review program guidelines and download an application at www.smileschangelives.org/apply or by calling 888-900-3554. Applications are available in English and in Spanish.
If your organization or office is interested in outreach materials to distribute to potential applicants, or if you have any questions about the program, please contact Ms. Umbreit at andrea@smileschangelives.org or at 816-421-4949. Orthodontists are always welcome to join the SCL network by emailing partner@smileschangelives.org.
