Dental Health Month
February is Dental Health Month and we would like to give you a few dental tips from the American Dental Association!
Brush your teeth twice a day with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste. Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won't do a good job of cleaning your teeth.
Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner. Tooth decay–causing bacteria still linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. This helps remove the sticky film on teeth called plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line.
Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.
Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams.
For more information, visit www.ada.org
We look forward to seeing you at your next appointment!

Happy Halloween from TS Orthodontics!
Halloween is just around the corner and that means lots of CANDY!!!Dr. Scanlan and his team want to make sure you have a fun and safe Halloween and that you know the difference between braces-safe and non-braces-safe candy. Sticky, chewy or hard candy can cause a great deal of damage to your brackets and wires, which can lead to more time spent in braces.
Here are some candies to avoid this year, if you are in braces.
Starburst®, Tootsie Roll®, Laffy Taffy®, salt water taffy, Jolly Rancher®, bubble and chewing gum, Air Heads®, Skittles®, Peanut M&M’s®, Snickers®, caramels and caramel and candy apples, jelly beans, Blow Pops®, Twizzlers®, Sugar Daddies®, Almond Joy®, Mike and Ike® and any other candies that are sticky, chewy, or hard.
Be safe and have fun!

What's the Deal with Retainers?

A few weeks ago, we talked about the importance of wearing your retainers. Now we are going to give you some information regarding Essix, Hawley and permanent retainers.
Essix retainers are…
-clear and fit over the teeth.
-produced from impressions that are taken of the teeth.
-open across the roof of the mouth.
-can be easily removed for eating, brushing and flossing.
-function just like invisalign only the there is no tooth movement occuring
-can serve as aligners in the years to come after braces are removed. This means that if a tooth starts to move out of alignment, your Essix retainer will realign your teeth, provided it has not been too long since the aligners have been worn.
Hawley retainers include…
-a metal wire that fits around the teeth and holds them in place.
-an acrylic arch that sits in the roof of the mouth.
-can easily be removed for eating, brushing and flossing.
Permanent retainers are…
-bonded inconspicuously to the inside of the teeth
-can only be removed by your orthodontist
No matter which type of retainer you have, it is extremely important to wear your retainer as often as your orthodontist recommends. Always remember to...
-brush your teeth after meals before putting your retainers back in.
-brush your retainer every time you brush your teeth.
-disinfect your retainer by soaking it in mouth wash.
-keep your retainers in your retainer case when you are not wearing them.
-never wrap your retainer in a napkin or paper towel because you might accidentally throw it away.
-keep retainers out of reach of pets
