Recycle Your Empty Toothpaste Tube

Here is fun blog from recyclebank.com about recycling your empty toothpaste tube!

Enjoy!!

Have you ever thought about repurposing an empty toothpaste tube? Me neither, until today. Now, if you’re thinking I’m going to provide you with a list chock full of brilliant ideas, well then you may be disappointed. After scouring the Net, I found only 3 truly useful (or at least creative) ideas for reusing a cleaned, empty toothpaste tube:

Knife and Scissors Protector
This would be useful for the one-off knives lying in your kitchen drawer (as opposed to the ones in your knife block, if you have one), and is especially handy if your kitchen drawers are prone to rummaging by little hands. To make your knife or scissors protector, cut off the cap end of your toothpaste tube. Wash and dry the tube completely. Place the open end of the tube over your knife and voilà — instant protection!

Pen Holder
Following the same instructions as above, you can turn a toothpaste tube into a pen holder that works well when tacked to a cork board in your office or a peg board in your garage.

Money Hider
This one gets the prize for most creative. The next time you have a need to hide a wad of cash, clean out an empty toothpaste tube (do not cut the tube — it must stay in tact). Once dry, roll up your bills and insert them into the empty tube and replace the cap. To retrieve your money, you’ll need to cut off the end of the tube. I’m thinking this would be useful for travel, keeping a rainy day stash or hiding money from your spouse (kidding on that one folks!).

Dental Health Month

February is Dental Health Month and we would like to give you a few dental tips from the American Dental Association!

Brush your teeth twice a day with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste. Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won't do a good job of cleaning your teeth.

Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner. Tooth decay–causing bacteria still linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. This helps remove the sticky film on teeth called plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line.

Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.

Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams.

For more information, visit www.ada.org

We look forward to seeing you at your next appointment!

Your SureSmile Arch Wires Appointment

Getting your custom archwire is the next phase of SureSmile after getting your braces on and having your SureSmile scan!

WHAT DO WIRES HAVE TO DO WITH WEARING BRACES?
In order to move your teeth, Dr. Scanlan places a wire through each bracket on each tooth. The bracket is the “handle” for keeping the wire in place. Once the wire is in place (within each bracket) a force is applied allowing the teeth to move.

HOW ARE SURESMILE WIRES DIFFERENT?
REGULAR WIRES: In traditional orthodontics, the orthodontist inserts a stiffer wire and uses special pliers to make bends that he estimates will achieve the desired results for your teeth to achieve the specific movements necessary. These changes may affect other teeth and even your bite; therefore, the orthodontist makes adjustments to the wire over several appointments to achieve the goals set.
SURESMILE WIRES: SureSmile wires are created by the SureSmile robot from the prescription that Dr. Scanlan has prescribed so that the wires are more accurately bent than humanly possible, less allowing for fewer appointments and fewer wire changes.

HOW ARE MY SURESMILE WIRES MADE?
The process began at your SureSmile scan (your last appointment). As you remember, from your scan, Dr. Scanlan obtained a 3-D model that he used to plan the final outcome of your treatment. Once Dr. Scanlan has completed the wire design and the prescription, the prescription is then sent to the robot. Within 5 minutes, all of the bends prescribed by Dr. Scanlan are placed into the wires, a process requiring adjustments over weeks or months manually.

DO I NEED TO BE MORE CAREFUL WITH THE SURESMILE WIRES?
Since the wires and brackets work together, it is important to follow Dr. Scanlan’s instructions to avoid breaking or damaging your brackets and/or wires. Throughout treatment, any broken brackets and/or wires may result in longer treatment.

ARE SURESMILE WIRES MORE COMFORTABLE?
SureSmile wires are more comfortable for two reasons:
A. Discomfort is often due to wire changes. Since SureSmile archwires are custom-designed especially for you, the archwires do not need to be changed constantly in order to advance treatment.
B. SureSmile archwires consist of a material called Copper Ni-Ti® which is easily bent at very high temperatures. Therefore, the robot heats the wire to a very high temperature and then custom bends the wire as prescribed by Dr. Scanlan. This wire is more flexible while effectively moving the teeth more accurately.

HOW DO SURESMILE WIRES SHORTEN TREATMENT TIME?
As we said, SureSmile allows Dr. Scanlan to plan your treatment and prescribe your custom wires to consolidate months of appointments. Last, because these bends allow your teeth to move more precisely, there are fewer archwire changes and fewer appointments needed. Therefore, treatment time can be reduced by as much as 40 percent!

Suresmile: Your Scanning Appointment

Congratulations! Now that your braces are on, it’s time for your SureSmile scan!

Why a scan?
The scan builds a 3-D model of your teeth on the computer. Dr. Scanlan will analyze the model to diagnose your treatment and design your custom archwires.

What happens at this appointment?
First, we will apply a white coating, called SureWhite®, which contains some of the same ingredients as toothpaste, to your teeth. Once the SureWhite® has been applied, it is dried. It is important to keep the teeth dry; therefore, we will use cheek retractors just like at your bonding appointment.
Next, we will begin to scan (take a picture) each tooth with a 3-D camera called the OraScanner®. As the OraScanner’s mirror moves over each tooth, it flashes a harmless white light that reflects off the teeth. As it flashes, it captures the picture. As each tooth is scanned, you can watch the images build the 3-D model of your teeth.

What is a scan?
We will scan your upper teeth, lower teeth and your teeth when you are biting together. It is very important that we capture your bite correctly!
How do I get the SureWhite off my teeth?
Once the scan is complete, you simply brush your teeth to remove the SureWhite®.

What happens to the scan?
The scan will be sent to the SureSmile Digital Lab where individual tooth models are made. This is the 3-D model that Dr. Scanlan will use to design your custom archwires to insert at your next appointment!

What is SureSmile?

What is Suresmile?
Suresmile is a ground-breaking treatment system that Dr. Scanlan uses and he is the first and only orthodontist in Western North Carolina who uses Suresmile.
With Suresmile, your teeth will be moving more directly and accurately, which mean less discomfort and a shorter treatment time.
Suresmile includes a series of wires that Dr. Scanlan prescribes for your individual mouth.

You probably have a friend or family member who has had braces. Remember when they used to go in every month to get their braces "tightened"? What the orthodontist was actually doing was removing the wires and manually placing different bends in them to get the teeth to move in different directions. Sometimes the bends over-corrected; sometimes they under-corrected, and this is why treatment took so long. Conventional treatment actually moved teeth more than they needed to move, in directions that were not intended. Much of traditional treatment by the orthodontist was correcting side-effects caused by treatment itself!

Dr. Scanlan uses a system called Suresmile that reduces the need for so many appointments and delivers a level of care to you or your child never seen before. With Suresmile, we will take a scan of your teeth a few months after getting your braces. A computer will build a 3-D model from this scan allowing Dr. Scanlan to analyze the movement your teeth need and apply those movements. This is only where the magic begins! Dr. Scanlan will also analyze movement that should be avoided and those movements can be minimized or completely prevented. Dr. Scanlan will decide where each tooth needs to be and give you the best smile possible and a healthy bite that lasts.

Your computer designed wire which Dr. Scanlan has created virtually in software is sent to a robot which bends customized wires for your teeth. These wires contain all the necessary bends to get your teeth from where they were when they were scanned to where they need to be for a beautiful smile. The precision of Suresmile helps move your teeth with accuracy. Since your teeth are not over-corrected or under corrected like traditional braces, you'll spend less time in braces..... almost 40% less time on average! Now is that standard of care? Dr. Scanlan says YES!
