10 Questions to ask before choosing your Asheville Orthodontist
Are you looking for an orthodontist for your kids or yourself?
Dr. Scanlan, an expert in orthodontics, treats patients of all ages.
The most common questions regarding orthodontic treatment are the cost of braces and time of treatment. It's also important to ask about follow-up care because once you have straight teeth you want to keep them that way!
Here are 10 questions you should ask your Asheville Orthodontist:
1) How much will orthodontic treatment cost? / What are the payment options?
Prior to an exam, it is difficult to acurately predict the investment of orthodontic treatment. At TS Orthodontics we make this process as easy as possible! As a courtesy, we will research your orthodontic insurance benefits and have the information available for you at your complimentary exam. Following the exam, a treatment plan will be provided along with a no-interest payment plan.
- Appliances being placed.
- All adjustment appointments, including emergency appointments.
- Appliances being removed.
- Retention (Clear retainers and/or permenant retainers).
- Retention follow-up appointments for one year following active orthodontic treatment.
4) How long will I have to wear braces?
5) What type of retainers will be used?
6) Do you accept my insurance? How do they pay you?
7) How long has Dr. Scanlan been in practice?
8) How are braces placed on the teeth? Will it hurt?
9) What sets Dr. Scanlan apart from other orthodontists that I may see?
In addition to our wonderful patients of North Carolina, Dr. Scanlan also treats patients from Tennessee, South Carolina, Virginia and Georgia who have chosen TS Orthodontics for this state-of-art technology and for our superior care.
10) What type of braces and appliances does Dr. Scanlan use?
Dr. Scanlan uses brackets allowing low frictional forces that provide more comfort and efficiency. Clear brackets are also option. Dr. Scanlan also uses high-tech archwires that are activated by your own body heat making them more active over a longer period of time. The archwires are bent with precision robotics enabling Dr. Scanlan to align the teeth more efficiently and with less discomfort. This helps reduce the number of appointments, thus reducing the number of classes missed from school or time missed from work.

Braces-Friendly Halloween Treat!
Dr. Scanlan and his team want to remind you to stay away from foods that might break or damage your braces. We also want to help you out a little by sharing a tasty, creepy Halloween treat that is most definitely braces-friendly! Enjoy!!
PEANUT BUTTER EYEBALLS*
Ingredients:
1/4 cup butter, completely softened
2 cups plus 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
1 cup creamy peanut butter
1 1/2 cups toasted rice cereal (like Rice Krispies)
12 ounces of white chocolate
1 tablespoon vegetable oil Food coloring - two colors
Directions: Combine the butter, powdered sugar, and peanut butter in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Mix on low speed until well combined. (If you have no mixer, this can be done by hand). Then mix in the toasted rice cereal. Using your hands, form into 1/2-ounce balls (the size of a large marble) and refrigerate until firm (about 1 hour). Place the white chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Melt, adding vegetable oil partway through. After all chocolate is melted, stir until smooth. Dip the balls, one at a time into the melted white chocolate mix, using a fork to roll them around so they are entirely coated then remove them from the chocolate and set on a waxed paper lined sheet pan. Chill to set up about 30 minutes. Separate remaining white chocolate into two bowls and add 1-2 drops of food coloring each to tint each bowl a different color. Reheat chocolate if necessary and, using a small spoon, place a dollop of the colored chocolate on the eyeball to make an iris. Use a smaller drop of the contrasting color for the pupil. Let the chocolate set, place balls in individual mini muffin papers and serve. Makes 36 balls.

Orthodontic Heath Month 2010~
October symbolizes the transition into the Fall season and of course, Halloween! For our team at TS Orthodontics, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), and orthodontic patients around the country, October also marks the National Orthodontic Health Month. This month is a great time to remind patients of the importance of strong oral hygiene and a braces-friendly diet, especially since many of the sticky and sweet Halloween treats can be harmful to braces and other orthodontic appliances.
Candy remains a huge part of Halloween for tens of millions of American kids each year. The National Confectioners Association says 93 percent of children in the United States go trick-or-treating, and estimates candy sales will be higher this year than ever. Candy is not all bad in moderation, but can lead to big problems in excess! It can lead to tooth decay, broken or chipped teeth, and delayed orthodontic treatment time due to broken or loose appliances and braces. Get the facts about Halloween candy and orthodontics by asking us! You can also learn more on the AAO’s National Orthodontic Health Month website. We also appreciate your help in spreading the word!
